HeartLine History
HeartLine's roots stem from the LifeLine telephone ministry, which originated in Sydney, Australia, in 1963, and grew to an international level by 1966. In 1967, the program arrived in the U.S. under the name of CONTACT. Through the years, CONTACT centers became the largest provider of telephone helpline and crisis intervention services in the country.
In Central Oklahoma, the mental health and faith communities realized there was a real need for a non-profit agency to provide the metro area with helpline services. In 1971, the Oklahoma City CONTACT Center trained over 100 volunteers and answered 8,200 calls in the first year.
On January 1, 2005, the organization was renamed HeartLine, Inc. Today, HeartLine serves over 1.3 million people in Central Oklahoma through its five programs, 2-1-1, the CareLine, Suicide Prevention Programs, the Gatekeeper Program, and the Volunteer Center. HeartLine strives to help meet the increasingly complex needs of the growing and diverse Central Oklahoma area.
